Foundational Relationships

Moses ascends the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights,

leaving the people behind as he enters the higher realms.

Through the dark clouds, he journeys—seeking God.

Moses teaches us the power of yearning, the beauty of seeking,

and the deep desire to connect with the Divine.

While we may not speak to God with the same intimacy that Moses did,

each of us has the capacity to draw near—

to approach God in our own unique way.

Moses reminds us that our relationship with God is the most essential and foundational relationship of all.

God is near.

God is eternal.

God is the source of life.

God is constant and unchanging.

This relationship is the most loving, giving, and sustaining connection we will ever have.

Yet, our relationships with others are also vital—life-affirming, life-sustaining, and essential.

We thrive in connection, and we suffer in isolation.

Solitary confinement is known as one of the worst forms of torture; loneliness is deeply painful.

In life, people move forward or away—our children, partners, parents, and friends may leave us in different ways.

At times, we may feel left behind or alone.

But knowing that God is always close, always seeking a relationship with us, is a profound comfort.

Every day, we have the opportunity to nurture and strengthen that connection.

At the same time, we are called to ease the loneliness of others.

May we cultivate meaningful, sustaining, and deep relationships—with God and with each other—

so that no one feels left behind or alone.

Shabbat Shalom,

Much love,

Elissa
