“To Thine Own Self BeTrue!”

Writer: Elissa FelderElissa Felder

In the climax of this week’s Torah reading

Joseph reveals his true identity to his brothers,

choosing to no longer hide,

to no longer pretend to be someone he isn't.

"He cried in a loud voice…

I am Joseph, your brother-it is me,

whom you sold into Egypt."

I am still alive; I am one of you.

I belong with you; I will look after you.

I do not hold a grudge nor am I angry.

I will not take revenge and I do not blame you.

"It was to be a provider that Gd sent me ahead of you."

It is all part of the divine plan.

Joseph, the viceroy, is now Joseph the younger brother,

Joseph the child of Jacob and Rachel,

Joseph the Tzadik (righteous man).

Can we safely reveal who we are?

Do we even know who we really are?

If I expose my true self, will I still be loved

by the most important people in my life?

Brene Brown speaks of the bravery and courage

it takes to be vulnerable and authentic.

Maybe it makes us more real, and more human,

but it's scary.

As we move through life’s ups and downs

our relationships are deeper, richer, sweeter,

more soul inspired

when we are in tune with ourselves.

The challenge is to be real and truthful in the

right measure with the right people.

My blessing for us all is that we are able to live honestly,

bravely, passionately, fully and lovingly,

with an ability to accept, help and love ourselves and each other,

so that our relationships are as close,

as deep and as meaningful as we want them to be.

Shabbat shalom
